My first and latest bikes.

Written by Brandon Els | 1st February, 2012

Some of the first bikes that my Dad bought me I remember so well: a 10 speed DHC road bike around 1975, my first BMX race bike around 1978 and the top of the range Redline PL20 around 1981 that cost my Dad about R 650 in those days. It was probably about 2 months pay for him back in those days.

What I remember the most was the excitement of seeing those bikes for the first time and the memories of all the great rides and races that I had on those bikes. There have been literally hundreds of bikes between 1975 and 2012, but this morning as I unpacked my new SCOTT Spark 29 PRO I was telling the staff here at Probike that the feelings of seeing the bike for the 1st time is as exciting as the most memorable bikes I had as a kid.

If you looking for me this afternoon please don't call Probike rather come to Norm Hudlin trails :-)

Happy Cycling!

AXIS Bikes Online!

Written by Brandon Els | 25th January, 2012

This week AXIS Bikes has gone online at www.axis-bikes.co.za

Dealers and consumers can now view online the range that is disrupting the pricing strategy of SA private label bike brands. It is interesting to see that the SA bicycle media is also now picking up that private label bike brands that are using open moulds are over-charging dealers and consumers.

At AXIS Bikes we use open moulds and make sure that we return the value to the consumer in the same way that brands in the USA and Europe do that follow the open mould strategy. Our strategy is to provide the market with no nonsense and core spec'd bikes at great value for money while backed up by the legendary warranty and service of Probike.

It's a great time to be a consumer and especially an AXIS Bikes customer!

"Almost all of our triathletes will compete in SCOTT bike-shoes and the new 2012 TT helmet, which we developed together with Simon Smart for Triathlon and TT for Team GreenEdge, and Christian Brader and Cyril Viennot will be racing and training in our SCOTT Running shoes. We are proud to keep all of these talented athletes on SCOTT Bicycles and still have most of them supported by SRAM, ZIPP and Profile Design, our long-term triathlon partners over the last years.

The state of the Indian bike market.

Written by Brandon Els | 12th January, 2012

It's 5 years now that we have been operating in the Indian bike market and it is really interesting to see how the market has developed. In many ways it is taking the shape of any other bike market in the world.

Mass retailers such as Hypercity, Big Bazaar and Reliance are establishing world class buying teams in the league of Walmart and are taking direct shipments of bikes under private label brands directly from China and are not purchasing from the traditional bike manufacturers in India.

Independent bicycle dealers are moving their price points up and are also allocating much less of their floor space to traditional Indian bike brands and more to international brands.

This is leaving the traditional Indian bike brands in a fight for relevance because although they have vast manufacturing capability they do not understand the modern Indian consumer and understand even less about bike branding and design. The tradional Indian bike brands are struggling to sell bikes for more than 7 500 Rupees while we are easily selling SCOTT at 28 500 Rupees and up to 200 000 Rupees for a bike like the 2012 Spark 40.

It is also interesting to see the strategy of international bike brands in India. Most are not prepared to do the hard work of establishing their own distribution network and companies and are hoping that tie-ups with traditional Indian bike companies will give them volume. Others are even happy to just sell their brand for a royalty payment and couldn't be cared how their brand is managed or positioned. These are lazy strategies that have or are in the process of back-firing as the culture of the brand is lost in the hands of tradtional Indian bike companies who understand very little of international bike brand heritage.

We are very happy to control our brands and distribution 100% with our own employees on the ground in India and building relationships with our dealers over lunch and supper. It is not the easy way, but it is the long-term route to sucess in India.

SCOTT and AXIS Bikes are absolutely flourishing and at our plus minus 50 dedicated dealers that we have cultivated over the last 5 years and our private label brands dominate the formal mass retail in India.

It sure is an interesting time in India and as I sit here at the Mumbai International Airport Star Alliance lounge I am even enjoying a very good Cabarnet from the Nasik Valley India. Incredible India - the tourism slogan is indeed accurate!

Happy Cycling!

Trails are more important than bikes.

Written by Brandon Els | 8th January, 2012

Yesterday while I was at 38 000 ft above sea level flying over here to Mumbai to meet with our Probike India team a thought dropped into my mind: trails are more important than bikes. I was reading a pretty strange book by John Kehoe called the Quantum Warrior so I guess that is where the thought came from. But then I thought further about it and it's true!

I have probably owned more than 150 bikes, but my favourite trail is still The Red Route. I have probably ridden more than 75 of the bikes on The Red Route and every time I need to validate a bike choice I take it to The Red Route to compare with others.

So in our debates about 26ers and 29ers and all(I am in India)! Let's not forget that trails are actually the most important thing in mountain biking and we should all dedicate a little, bit of our time cultivating a relationship with our favourite trail and dontaing time or money to maintain it.

Bikes come and go, but trails don't and they are more important to us enjoying our sport!

Happy Cycling!
